Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dentistry is the cornerstone of our practice! The two main causes of tooth loss are decay (cavities) and gum disease. Regular cleanings and checkups, along with daily brushing and flossing, are proven to help prevent and detect early problems. At your checkup, digital xrays may be utilized to evaluate in between the teeth and the supporting bone. In addition, fluoride is also an important factor in preventing tooth decay. In-office treatments may be indicated, but also be sure to use a fluoride toothpaste in your daily brushing routine. Preventive dental care allows us to treat conservatively and help you maintain a healthy mouth and smile!

Periodontal (Gum) Care

If you have not had a dental cleaning in a while, periodontal disease may be present. The bacteria, plaque and tartar that builds up over time causes an infection in the gums that makes them puffy, red and sore as well as bleed very easily. This disease progresses with time and can cause the supporting bone around the teeth to be lost. This bone loss causes the teeth to become more loose over time and can cause the teeth to eventually need extraction. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) may be indicated to remove the infection and stabilize the disease. Regular cleanings are imperative in controlling gum disease.
